Sherwood

Through a chain of fortunate events, (namely, I went to EFY in 2006 and met Jason Call, who is now a former member of the band Daphne Loves Derby, and we’ve kept in touch a little bit over the years, and know’s I’m an artsy fartsy graphic design major) I’ve been enlisted to work on t-shirt designs for the Californian band, Sherwood.

Over the past week under little direction I’ve been working on a few designs, and here is what I just sent the band to get feedback and make adjustments before they go to print (if they go to print.. ughh.. I hate thinking that this isnt going to go through).

I don’t really know if this is my style, or if it’s just a style. I think it’s just a style because I’ve seen stuff like this before; just added my own flare as to not step on any copyright infringements. I’m really lucky to get this oppertunity to get my feet wet with real free lance work. I wonder a lot about the effectiveness of my designs; I wonder if I’m targeting Sherwood’s audience in the correct way. I feel these are trendy enough styles and ‘in’, and they told me to make it ‘arty’ but I wonder if this is too much of a stretch from the flourescent 80’s reincarnated desisns their audience is used to. We’ll see…

Anyway, without further ado,

This was the first idea executed; a typewriter with the band’s name, and the album name (QU) left white so the shirt color would show through. They told me they didn’t necessarily want their name to be the focal point, so I believe this works.

Two styles of printing. Personally I like the sideways print even if it means it’s not exactly legible.

This is my favorite design. It took a little while to work out, and after I ditched trying to adjust levels on wood grain textures and try to dumb down vectored images of trees, I just drew it out a simple tree outline, and drew the grain where I wanted it on the tree and viola! I think it looks rather nice.

Some shirt colors

I hand drew a fontĀ  based off Eloquent and texturized it.

I think it would also look cool with flourescent pink yellow and blue dots; but I think the font should stay black or white.

Lastly, gleaning inspiration from the book, Fingerprint, I came up with this. Not much too it other than hand drawn elements and playing on the vertical ‘HE’

Suggested color schemes. Brown on colored shirt.

And that’s it. Hopefully you’ll be able to purchase these shirts soon! Here’s crossing my fingers.
